The founders of the lab are Ach Adhvaryu - Professor of Economics and Director of 21st Century India Center at the School of Global Policy and Strategy, UC San Diego (www.achadhvaryu.com), Anant Ahuja-head of Organization Development at Shahi Exports Pvt. Ltd., and Anant Nyshadham- Assistant Professor of Business Economics and Public Policy at the University of Michigan (www.anantnyshadham.com).


Role: Field Consultant

Location: Coimbatore/Tiruppur

Position Type: Contract-based full-time role

Contract Duration - 3 months (extension on need basis)

Remuneration: INR 30000 - 50000 per month


The Field Consultant will support the study across the design, data collection, and analysis phases by coordinating field activities with MSMEs, facilitating surveys and energy audits, translating and contextualizing research materials, conducting and documenting interviews, and assisting the research team with transcription, data analysis, and preparation of final study outputs on technology adoption, energy efficiency, and worker well-being.


What will you do (areas that will play to your strength and all the responsibilities we will trust you with):

  • Support required in the design phase:
    1. Consultant would be expected to attend training on survey instruments.
    2. Consultant would be required to translate all relevant material required for data collection in different factories in Tamil/Hindi.
  • Support required in the data collection phase: Support GBL team with data collection
    1. Schedule meeting/audits with MSMEs shortlisted for the study: This will require regular coordination with relevant stakeholders in the MSMEs shortlisted for the study.
    2. Surveys with decision makers and workers: GBL team would like to conduct surveys with the firms’ decision makers and workers to understand their existing state of technology, preferences regarding energy efficiency, and different aspects of worker well-being. The duration of these surveys will be 1-2 hours per respondent in a factory.
    - The consultant would be expected to schedule the meetings for these surveys and coordinate with the firm on the same.
    - The consultant would also be required to share comments on the survey instruments to ensure they are contextualized.
    - The consultant would be required to take notes during the surveys and maintain detailed field notes.
    - The consultant would be required to conduct surveys with some respondents.
  • Detailed energy audit: GBL with support from an energy auditing firm wants to conduct a detailed energy audit. This usually takes multiple visits.
    -The consultant would be expected to schedule the visits for this audit and coordinate with the firm on the same.
    -The consultant would be expected to schedule the visit for the final presentation/workshop with 3 MSMEs after the audit reports are ready.
  • Support required in the analysis phase:
    1.Consultant to support in transcribing and translating the interview transcripts into English.
    2. Consultant to support associates during data analysis and in reviewing the recommendations


Who are you? Ideally, you have (The areas of knowledge and expertise that matter most for this role):

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Public Health, Gender Studies, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in qualitative data collection, such as in-depth interviews and Focus group discussions.
  • Excellent communication, training, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organisational and project management abilities.
  • Proficiency in relevant computer skills like experience in Microsoft Word and MS Excel.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to travel to project sites and communities as required.
  • Previous experience working with MSMEs will be an added advantage.
  • Ability to read, write and converse in Tamil & English. Knowledge of Hindi would be an advantage.
